Liverpool v Man United: Preview

by Matthew Taylor

Hey Reds! After a huge mid-week win against Wolves on Wednesday, Liverpool turns their attention to bitter rivals, Manchester United. United comes to Anfield on Sunday for game week twenty-five of the Premier League.

Perhaps the most-iconic fixture in English football, and one of the fiercest rivalries in world football. There are many factors that fuel the hatred of one another including the proximity of the two cities, their football dominance both nationally and globally, and their massive worldwide fanbases.

Of course, this huge rivalry has produced iconic clashes throughout the years. In preparation for the latest sequel on Sunday, I'm going to go through my top 3 Liverpool v United games!

"I was always looking forward to this game, it’s the game. United are quite a big club as well and so always when we face them it’s massive."

Manchester United v Liverpool, 24 October 2021

One of the most recent games, taking place just last season, but I think it's pretty obvious why it makes my list! Embarrassing United in their own backyard is what us Reds dream of. Seeing Liverpool toy with United in Old Trafford will always put a smile on my face. Mo Salah grabbing a hattrick was the icing on the cake!

Another humiliating win for Liverpool at Old Trafford, which is why this makes the list. Are you seeing a theme? What makes this one special is the fact that nobody was expecting it. I think Nemanja Vidic still wakes up in the middle of the night with nightmares of Fernando Torres running rings around him! I don't think any Liverpool fan would have believed you if you had told them that Andrea Dossena would chip van der Sar to finish off the game.

Although I was only eight when this game happened, I still remember the pure joy when Liverpool won. Gerard Hullier's Liverpool side faced United in the League Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Two Liverpool youngsters, you may have heard of, Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen netted to win the cup for the Reds! There's not much better than beating Man United, but beating them in a final is just something else!

With so many happy memories from this fixture, it was extremely hard narrowing it down to three! With Anfield bumping on Sunday, let's hope for another iconic Liverpool win to add to this list!
