With the slamming shut of the 2015 Premier League transfer window it’s been interesting to see the moves of incoming/departing players. To be honest there haven’t been too many major moves this late in the window as most clubs did their business early. LFC’s got some exciting talent settling in with Joe Gomez being the standout so far and James Milner already wearing the armband in place of injured Captain Jordan Henderson.

Liverpool did make it to Wembley but sadly without the trophy we all thought the squad could have given Steven Gerrard as an early birthday gift. The 2-1 defeat to Aston on April 19th puts the only objective left. Give everything left in the tank and push towards the top four. Liverpool has 6 matches left to go and are only 7 points behind Manchester City in the last Champions League qualification spot. A bright spot in Gerrard’s final campaign is still a mathematical possibility. “So you’re saying there’s a chance.”
Here are 6 talking points to keep in mind as we watch Liverpool play the final seven matches of the 2014-15 season:
6. The final six matches are West Brom, Hull City, QPR, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Hull City. If Liverpool shows the form they had against Manchester City in March, winning out is a possibility. Realistically speaking, Liverpool will need to dig real deep.
5. One of those away matches is at Stamford Bridge. Nobody ever said it was going to be easy. Chelsea leads the rest of the league by double digits for a reason. The results in London will let everyone know how close or far Liverpool is from competing for silverware next season
4. Four of the final six matches are at home. Anfield has always been know for being a fortress. The Kop and energy has been known to lift the squad to another level. Winning out at home is essential to keeping any chance for the last Champions League spot for next season.
3. Brendan Rodgers has been at the helm of Liverpool Football club for three seasons. The argument for sticking behind the manager or seeking his replacement has begun. There are still matches to be played, but it is food for thought when you look at the trophy case. Not since Phil Taylor in 1956-59 has a manager gone three seasons.
2. Two points on Mario Balotelli. His equalizer in the 88th was not off sides. He was also flagged offsides more than any other player, even though he only played 45 minutes. “Why always me?”
1. We have to keep reiterating that this is the final season we will see Steven Gerrard on the pitch for Liverpool. Even though the dream scenario of a Wembley final was not meant to be, anything can happen for the final matches of the campaign. The dream is not over, there is still a job for Liverpool to do.

If you did not know, today is God’s birthday… the legend, the one, the only Robbie Fowler. Well loved by Liverpool Football Club, Fowler netted 183 goals in 369 matches for his squad from 1991 – 2001 and for his second coming in the 2006-2007 squad. For England he was capped 26 times finding the net 7 times. When EA Sports & X-Box asked him to select his Legends XI team, you would figure one of his former LFC teammates would make the cut. Nope. Perhaps one of his England comrades? Nope. Come to think of it, the only England international mentioned was Gary Neville and we all know he played for the lot down the road.
Sigh… God, why have you forsaken us?
All kidding aside, if given the chance to select your squad who would you choose for your starting Legend XI? Here’s my starting 11.
Goalkeeper: Brad Friedel
Backline: Franz Beckenbauer, Fabio Cannavaro, Phillip Lahm & Sergio Ramos
Midfield: Arjen Robben, Zinedine Ziadane, Steven Gerrard, Lionel Messi
Attack: Pele, Luis Suarez
At least Gerrard made it into my team (solves the LFC & England snubs). So many players to consider… it wasn’t easy for me. I did toy with the likes of Jamie Carragher on the back line. Fernando Torres in his prime, Xabi Alonso or even Javier Maschereno… Craig Bellamy & Fowler would definitely be on the team if I considered my favorite goal celebrations.

As Liverpool’s season draws to a close, we at The Anfield Shop cannot help but feel emotional knowing that Steven Gerrard’s chapter as a Liverpool player is coming near. Each player on the upcoming All Star charity match this Sunday between Team Gerrard and Team Jamie Carragher is overflowing with former teammates and rivals of LFC. Each is a link to the different special matches and moments that defined these two cornerstones of Liverpool Football Club. Although a charity match, this is going to have the energy of a celebration. We hope you get to catch the match somewhere memorable. In honor of Gerrard, here are the Top 8 Steven Gerrard items we have here at The Anfield Shop.
The domination that could have been. I have seen this team lineup before… Luis Suarez partnered up with Fernando Torres up top with Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso dominating the midfield. It wasn’t a dream. Honest. It was when I continued to play my FIFA season from EA Sports FIFA 2011. Now at the end of the month my video game roster becomes a reality and then some when the Steven Gerrard vs Jamie Carragher All-Star Charity Match happens at Anfield on March 29th. Well and then some, when you put in John Terry alongside John Arne Riise and Frenchman Thierry Henry in the starting 11 to bolster the attack. I know… right? Check out Gerrard’s starting 11:
Gerrard’s XI: Brad Jones; John Arne Riise, John Terry, Stephen Warnock; Ryan Babel, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard (C), Kevin Nolan; Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres, Thierry Henry
Jamie Carragher’s team is pretty fierce as well. Pepe Reina returns to man the sticks with Alvaro Arbeloa at his side, passing it up to Luis Garcia and Raul Meireles with Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy creating havok and space for Didier Drogba to attack. Not bad either. Here is Carragher’s starting 11:
Speaking of the man with the great golf swing… Haha… As each player got the invite, their social media spread the word. My favorite’s was an old rivalry within the club. John Arne Riise’s tweet about his upcoming match against Bellamy had to be my favorite out of all the former Anfield stars.
I think it will be team Gerrard by a landslide. Who do you think has the stronger team going into the All Star Charity match? It is great to dream what could have been. Terry clearing it to Gerrard, to Alonso out to Suarez blistering down the left. He crosses to Henry flicked by Torres… Goal. Or Carragher to Meireles. He finds Kuyt on the right. Kuyt through ball to Bellamy, who strikes it off Riise’s head, rebounded to Drogba and past Jones for a wild goal. Haha… a man can dream.

In a bold move by manager Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool started the match on the road at St. Mary’s without striker in the line-up. As it turned out Liverpool didn’t need one to see of a hard fighting Southampton. Goals by Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling guaranteed Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Southampton. This victory extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 10 games. Taking a look at the table, they also sit only three points from third place.
Taking a look at the upcoming schedule, Liverpool play Manchester City, Burnley (who drew versus Chelsea), an FA Cup quarterfinal against Rovers, Swansea (who beat Manchester United), Manchester United followed by Arsenal. Liverpool is still alive in the Europa League as well, thanks to Mario Balotelli’s penalty versus Beskitas (I’ll take it). The rest of March is pivotal to whether we are celebrating the continued momentum of Steven Gerrard’s final season with Liverpool, versus hoping the rest of the league is struggling as well to keep their ship afloat into May. The way the youthful core of Liverpool is playing with Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho creating the chances, I like our odds.
*Raising my pint glass*
Here’s to a keeping big momentum on our side. Top four or bust, let’s get back in the Champions League next season, eh? …and let’s bring home some silverware for Gerrard’s last run. You’ll Never Walk Alone!
