Liverpool Campaign Has 6 Matches Left: 6 Talking Points

Liverpool did make it to Wembley but sadly without the trophy we all thought the squad could have given Steven Gerrard as an early birthday gift. The 2-1 defeat to Aston on April 19th puts the only objective left. Give everything left in the tank and push towards the top four. Liverpool has 6 matches left to go and are only 7 points behind Manchester City in the last Champions League qualification spot. A bright spot in Gerrard’s final campaign is still a mathematical possibility. “So you’re saying there’s a chance.”

Here are 6 talking points to keep in mind as we watch Liverpool play the final seven matches of the 2014-15 season:

6. The final six matches are West Brom, Hull City, QPR, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Hull City. If Liverpool shows the form they had against Manchester City in March, winning out is a possibility. Realistically speaking, Liverpool will need to dig real deep.

5. One of those away matches is at Stamford Bridge. Nobody ever said it was going to be easy. Chelsea leads the rest of the league by double digits for a reason. The results in London will let everyone know how close or far Liverpool is from competing for silverware next season

4. Four of the final six matches are at home. Anfield has always been know for being a fortress. The Kop and energy has been known to lift the squad to another level. Winning out at home is essential to keeping any chance for the last Champions League spot for next season.

3. Brendan Rodgers has been at the helm of Liverpool Football club for three seasons. The argument for sticking behind the manager or seeking his replacement has begun. There are still matches to be played, but it is food for thought when you look at the trophy case. Not since Phil Taylor in 1956-59 has a manager gone three seasons.

2. Two points on Mario Balotelli. His equalizer in the 88th was not off sides. He was also flagged offsides more than any other player, even though he only played 45 minutes. “Why always me?”

1. We have to keep reiterating that this is the final season we will see Steven Gerrard on the pitch for Liverpool. Even though the dream scenario of a Wembley final was not meant to be, anything can happen for the final matches of the campaign. The dream is not over, there is still a job for Liverpool to do.

Steven Gerrard vs Jamie Carragher All-Star Charity Match

The domination that could have been. I have seen this team lineup before… Luis Suarez partnered up with Fernando Torres up top with Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso dominating the midfield. It wasn’t a dream. Honest. It was when I continued to play my FIFA season from EA Sports FIFA 2011. Now at the end of the month my video game roster becomes a reality and then some when the Steven Gerrard vs Jamie Carragher All-Star Charity Match happens at Anfield on March 29th. Well and then some, when you put in John Terry alongside John Arne Riise and Frenchman Thierry Henry in the starting 11 to bolster the attack. I know… right? Check out Gerrard’s starting 11:

Gerrard’s XI: Brad Jones; John Arne Riise, John Terry, Stephen Warnock; Ryan Babel, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard (C), Kevin Nolan; Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres, Thierry Henry

Jamie Carragher’s team is pretty fierce as well. Pepe Reina returns to man the sticks with Alvaro Arbeloa at his side, passing it up to Luis Garcia and Raul Meireles with Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy creating havok and space for Didier Drogba to attack. Not bad either. Here is Carragher’s starting 11:

Carragher’s XI: Pepe Reina, Martin Kelly, Jamie Carragher, Alvaro Arbeloa, Luis Garcia, Raul Meireles, Jonjo Shelvey, Craig Noone, Dirk Kuyt, Didier Drogba, Craig Bellamy.

Speaking of the man with the great golf swing…  Haha… As each player got the invite, their social media spread the word. My favorite’s was an old rivalry within the club. John Arne Riise’s tweet about his upcoming match against Bellamy had to be my favorite out of all the former Anfield stars.

I think it will be team Gerrard by a landslide. Who do you think has the stronger team going into the All Star Charity match? It is great to dream what could have been. Terry clearing it to Gerrard, to Alonso out to Suarez blistering down the left. He crosses to Henry flicked by Torres… Goal. Or Carragher to Meireles. He finds Kuyt on the right. Kuyt through ball to Bellamy, who strikes it off Riise’s head, rebounded to Drogba and past Jones for a wild goal. Haha… a man can dream.

So who’s team takes it? Steven Gerrard or Jamie Carragher? Let us know via Social Media by tagging us at @AnfieldShop & @AnfieldShopBlog plus use the hashtag #AnfieldShop

Liverpool On A 10 Game Unbeaten Run In The Premier League

In a bold move by manager Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool started the match on the road at St. Mary’s without striker in the line-up. As it turned out Liverpool didn’t need one to see of a hard fighting Southampton. Goals by Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling guaranteed Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Southampton. This victory extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 10 games. Taking a look at the table, they also sit only three points from third place.

Taking a look at the upcoming schedule, Liverpool play Manchester City, Burnley (who drew versus Chelsea), an FA Cup quarterfinal against Rovers, Swansea (who beat Manchester United), Manchester United followed by Arsenal. Liverpool is still alive in the Europa League as well, thanks to Mario Balotelli’s penalty versus Beskitas (I’ll take it).  The rest of March is pivotal to whether we are celebrating the continued momentum of Steven Gerrard’s final season with Liverpool, versus hoping the rest of the league is struggling as well to keep their ship afloat into May. The way the youthful core of Liverpool is playing with Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho creating the chances, I like our odds.

*Raising my pint glass*

Here’s to a keeping big momentum on our side. Top four or bust, let’s get back in the Champions League next season, eh? …and let’s bring home some silverware for Gerrard’s last run. You’ll Never Walk Alone!

First Look at Steven Gerrard In A LA Galaxy Kit

The video game company EA Sports gives us the first look at what Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard looks like in a LA Galaxy kit. We still have some time with Gerrard at Liverpool, but The Anfield Shop came across this short video from FIFA 2015 on our feeds and felt inclined to share with all of you.

I have to admit as a San Diegan I have never supported any LA sports franchise. The words “Beat LA” have been drilled into my head as soon as I realized the energy and passion behind who you support in sports. That being said… I am still debating whether or not to buy a Gerrard kit from the Galaxy. However, I do know I will be keeping tabs on the Galaxy going into next season more than I ever have, since the league began.

We at The Anfield Shop want to know if you going to start watching more MLS when Gerrard lines up for the Galaxy? Let us know via Social Media by tagging us at @AnfieldShop & @AnfieldShopBlog plus use the hashtag #AnfieldShop

Gerrard Leaving Anfield: 5 Things Liverpool Fans Still Have To Look Forward To

Steven Gerrard
695 games, 180 goals
1 Champions League
2 FA Cups
3 League Cups
1 UEFA Cup
2 UEFA Super Cups
1 Charity Shield

All good things must come to an end and sadly after this 2014-15 campaign, so does our time with Captain Fantastic… there’s only one Steven Gerrard. When social media started to whisper about Gerrard’s retirement, I first met it with the 5 stages of grief. I felt like a part of my Liverpool soul had just died.

But after making it to acceptance, I have realized that our time with Steven Gerrard over the past 15 years with the first team have been special. Liverpool fans bore witness to 17 seasons (15 top flight) and 695 games by Gerrard. His caps with the English national team stand at 114 appearances, third all time for England. The Los Angeles Galaxy and Major League Soccer have struck a deal and lightening rod of attention by prying Gerrard from Anfield. Great for US soccer, void created for English football and especially for Liverpool.

“My decision is completely based on my wish to experience something different in my career and life, and I also want to make sure that I have no regrets when my playing career is eventually over,” Gerrard said in the LA Times.

The mood around Liverpool fans is thankful, but still in shock. The let down of our return to the Champions League, followed by the inability to keep the pace with last season’s title hopes have the LFC faithful searching for the silver lining. Gerrard is here until May, but will be coming to the USA. We must look forward to the positive side of this happening. Here are 5 things that Liverpool fans can still look forward to.

5. Steven Gerrard playing for the MLS means that all of us Yankees get to see captain play in person next season.

Although not ideal if you support a club that isn’t the LA Galaxy, Gerrard playing in the MLS allows us to see the LFC legend play the next two seasons. We have been supporting the man and chanting his name at the pubs and through various cable packages here in the US. I can’t help but be excited that he will be playing here in the states. I grew up chanting the words, “Beat LA!” With Gerrard stateside, I may have a change of heart.

4. It is finally time to see if Jordan Henderson truly is the man to wear the captain’s armband.

It is time to see if the time and money spent on Hendo will return like we all hope. With Gerrard leaving the midfield at LFC, Henderson has the reigns of the squad. It will be interesting to see how Rodgers develops Henderson’s role without Gerrard in the mix. To some extent we are starting to witness a bit of it this season.  All eyes will be on Henderson to fill those very big midfield shoes at Liverpool.

3. If healthy…Divock Origi is more than likely coming into the squad from Lille.

GET WELL SOON! Liverpool Echo reported today that Divock Origi sustained a groin injury and is currently undergoing an MRI. According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool will have to pay an additional £3m in addition to the £10m they paid for the Belgian striker, in order to bring him in from Lille this transfer window.

“No deal is yet in place with Lille but the initial discussions have been encouraging and Anfield officials are confident they will reach a successful conclusion.”

“Origi is desperate to begin his Liverpool career after enduring a torrid campaign in France.”

If he his healthy, Origi would be much needed relief for Daniel Sturridge, who returns from injury this month. Opinion is split whether or not the 19 year old needs more time to develop before being brought into the fold at Anfield. Yet, you remember how old Raheem Sterling was when he first featured for LFC’s first team.

2. The Daily Mail reports that Raheem Sterling is set to renew his contract at Liverpool with a new 5 year deal.

With all the speculation of the 20 year old England international leaving for Real Madrid or Manchester City, news out of the Merseyside about Sterling renewing his contract at Anfield is welcomed news. They are not out of the water, as pen has not been put to paper yet in regards to contract. However, the fact that the dialogue has finally been started about keeping Sterling home, has been a welcome sign to Liverpool fans. Gerrard’s exit would certainly rattle the owners into making sure the foundation of the team is still intact.

1. We have until May to sit back and admire the remaining matches we have with a legend.

After a masterful brace against AFC Wimbledon today, Gerrard kept Liverpool in the FA Cup. Next up for LFC is Bolton Wanderers.

“I always enjoy the FA Cup,’ Gerrard said on BBC One. “I grew up loving the competition and as it’s going to be my last time, I want to make the most of it and try and go all the way.”

Liverpool is still in the Europa League as well. An article I read on the Metro summed up how if everything lines up in Gerrard and Liverpool’s favor, we will be in for quite a ride at the end of the season.

The Europa League final in Warsaw is three days before Gerrard’s 35th birthday. Gerrard’s birthday falls on the FA Cup final. Can you imagine if Liverpool take both trophies, what May will feel like for all of the Liverpool faithful. It all starts with a dream.
