Liverpool were unfortunate not to come out of Anfield with a first leg advantage in their Capital One Cup draw versus Chelsea on Tuesday. Liverpool hammered nineteen shots at Thibaut Courtois while Chelsea only threatened the Liverpool goal twice. Unfortunately for the good guys, one of those shots was Eden Hazard’s first half penalty. Liverpool certainly deserved more than just Raheem Sterling’s goal in the 59th. Alas, they travel to Stamford Bridge for the second leg of the cup… where Chelsea has not lost a match this campaign.
Sterling’s goal underlines his importance to the Liverpool side and speaks the necessity keep him at Anfield long term. All the speculation about contract extensions or going to another club isn’t disturbing Sterling’s concentration on what matters. The team winning.
“Everyone in the team contributes and I am no different,” said Sterling in The Guardian. “We are a team. I am not trying to pick up a ‘main man status’ this season. As long as the team wins and we get good performances that is all that matters to me.”
“It will help our confidence because we played our normal game against Chelsea. We did the things we wanted to do. We were not forcing our play. We probed when we need to probe and attacked when we need to attack.
It will be difficult at Stamford Bridge because they haven’t lost there this season but if we play our normal game and play the football that we know we can play I definitely think chances will come. Then it is up to us to take them and to defend well.”
Sterling did regram this amazing image from Abokr Omar on his Instagram that gave us all a laugh. On to the match at Stamford Bridge lads and ladies.
